Welcome! That’s President Roosevelt signing the Social Security Act in 1935. Sitting just behind him to the right and looking directly into the camera is Secretary of Labor Frances Perkins, or “Miss Perkins,” as the press called her. It was Perkins who orchestrated the executive and legislative negotiations that led to the Act, which has been with us ever since.
