This course will familiarize you with basic themes of United States history from the 1870s through the late 1970s. The areas that we will explore will include:
- The post-Civil War industrial revolution
- The political crisis of the 1890s and the dawn of U.S. imperialism
- The Progressive Era
- The First World War and the emergence of the modern, urban United States
- The Great Depression and New Deal
- The McCarthy era and Cold War liberalism
- The 1960s as a revolt against Cold War conformity
- The resurgence of the Right in American politics and culture
