This course will familiarize you with basic themes of United States history from the 1870s through the late 1970s. The areas that we will explore will include:

• The post-Civil War industrial revolution
• The political crisis of the 1890s and the dawn of U.S. imperialism
• The Progressive Era
• The First World War and the emergence of the modern, urban United States
• The Great Depression and New Deal
• The McCarthy era and Cold War liberalism
• The 1960s as a revolt against Cold War conformity
• The resurgence of the Right in American politics and culture
